A quiet village in winter, flooded with people in the summer, since many residents of the capital have their summer houses there. From Oropos there is a ferry to the city of Eretria located just opposite, on the island of Evvia (Euboeia).
In a small valley six kilometers southwest of Oropos one can visit the archaeological site of Amphiareion. The largest sanctuary- late 5th century BCE –to be dedicated to the Hero- King of the city of Argos, Amphiaraos, who was also considered a God with the gifts of prophecy and healing , closely associated with Asclepius, the God of medicine. The sacred infirmary that operated in this beautiful place, had facilities targeted towards both body and soul. Pilgrims gathered there to seek oracular counsel and healing. The Amphiareion was founded while Oropos was in the hands of the Athenians. Archaeological findings also include an ancient theater, a gymnasium, and baths. Prominent parts of the Temple of Amphiaraos remain visible today together with the ruins of the altar, the sacred fountain into which the cured offered their coins, part of the ancient theater, and the quarters of the patients and the healers.
You can visit the Amfiareion daily from 8:30 to 15:00 from 8th June until 31st of October.
