Karpenisi is the capital of the prefecture and as it is built in the hillsides of Tymfristos it is full of pine, oak and chestnut trees. It played an important role in the Greek Revolution of 1821 and Eugenios Giannoulis Etolos established there the first school.
Karpenisi is a famous destination for thousands of visitors that come here during winter to enjoy not only the ski centre but also the unharmed nature of Evrytania by taking part in hiking, rafting, canyoning and trekking ventures. In 1991, Evrytania was singled out by UNESCO as one of the purest areas on earth.
The square is the centre of Karpenisi. The statue of Katsantonis and Markos Botsaris, the church of Agia Triada with the bell tower built by Eugenios Giannoulis, the platanus trees and the cafes are all symbols of different periods of history. The capital, which is only 286 kilometers away of Athens, offers a wide range of choices for accommodation, food and entertainment.
