Kardamaina is built above the ancient city of Alasarna, which according to archaeological research is inhabited since the Neolithic years. During the ancient years it was an important commercial and cultural center and today it is a modern tourist resort with luxurious hotel complexes and intense night life. As an ancient settlement, it has many archaeological findings, most important of which are the temple of Apollo Pythaios and the ancient theatre. Another important sight is the basilica of Agia Theotita. Kardamaina also has its own port, from where ships depart to Nisyros. “Alasarnia”, a cultural festival, is held every summer in the area, as well as two big feasts celebrating Agios Ioannis on the 29th of August and Theotokos on the 8th of September.
