The city with the unique diachronic vitality, the capital of Syros Ermoupoli, built between two hills to the east of the island, spreads out till the bustling port. Its name derives from the name of the Olympian god, Kerdoos Hermes, who is considered to be the patron of the island and its traders. It might not be the main port of Greece anymore, but the wide economic activity of the old days left traces of nobleness, traces of the urban center of the 18th and the 19th century. It has marble neoclassical buildings, which did and still do make it stand out in Greece. This is the new town built by refugees from Psara, Chios and Asia Minor, who as merchants and ship-owners to their old homelands gave all their passion and experience in its emergence. Walking on its wide steps and wandering around its alleys, you will find yourself in the main Miaoulis Square where stands the City Hall, a masterpiece designed by the German architect Chiller. This square is the heart of the town, in which the locals and the visitors of the island spent hours having fun and talking. If you wander around a little more, you will be dimmed by "Apollon" Theater, the famous miniature of La Scala di Milano and the first opera theater in Modern Greece. Another surprise of the town is the church of Agios Nikolaos of the “Rich” of masterly architecture, which is worth visiting. Your perambulation may end in Vaporia, the island's first leading neighborhood, structured by bourgeois families, as indicated by the imposing mansions with plaster decorations and elaborate front gates. This modernized town has way much more to show to its visitors. Museums, churches and countless cultural spaces, with events throughout the year, will not let you get bored not even for a second, while those who want to have fun they only have to descend to the beach, the busiest place of Ermoupoli, with numerous cafes, bars, ouzeri and crowded nightclubs that stay open until dawn. You can go shopping in the alleys of the city, where you will find traditional stores as well as modern shopping precincts, all tended by the courtesy of the dignified inhabitants of Syros. Among them lies one of the oldest bookstores in the country, more than a hundred years old. And do not forget that in the center of the city is located a municipal bus network, from where you can take the bus without any charge and visit the suburbs of the city as well as any part of the island you might wish.
