To the northwest of Ermoupoli, the area that saved thousands of people from both the pirates during the Byzantine period but also from the Turks during the Ottoman Empire, Ano Syros was built amphitheatrically by the Venetians. The hill on which it is built is called San Tzortzis and its name clearly indicates the influences of the Venetians in the designations and the way of life on the island. The homeland of the ancient Greek philosopher Pherecydes and the great Greek musician Markos Vamvakaris, this medieval town has a distinct and multicultural atmosphere. You will be welcomed by the typical arcade, through which you will find yourself in its interior. You will go up several steps passing through very narrow alleys with whitewashed traditional insular houses (the characteristic of Ano Syros is its "dense" street layout as a precaution from the enemies during old times), until you find yourself at the top with the spectacular view. Therein lies the metropolis of the Catholics "San Tzortzis '', built in the medieval era in the place of a Byzantine church. From this point you can admire the neighboring islands, Tinos, Mykonos, Dilos, Paros and Naxos as well as the gorgeous sunset. This settlement has numerous chapels and churches, among which the monastery of the Capuchins and the monastery of the Jesuits are worth visiting. The Museum dedicated to the musician Markos Vamvakaris will take you back to the most important part of music history in Greece; the aquarium will show you the marine organisms and fish species that are found on the shores of the island, while the exhibition of the traditional professions and tools will show you the industriousness of the islanders. You can reach Ano Syros by bus from the port, since the distance is only 3500 meters of asphalt roadway.
