A modern and rapidly developing town on the borders between Aetolia and Acarnania. Although it is neither picturesque nor has an architectural interest, its residents are especially hardworking something that has made this town the trade center and most populous area of the prefecture.
Initially it was called Vrachori and there were many references to it, before and during the revolution as well. In 1835 it was renamed Agrinio, and its growth was boosted suddenly after the arrival of the residents of the villages drowned by Acheloos waters, to create Lake Kremasta and Lake Kastraki.
Some of the sightseeings are the Municipal Park, the Archaeological Museum of Agrinion and Holy Temple of Agios Christoforos.
A pre-revolutionary custom that still takes place is the “halkounia”. Every Good Friday halkounia (self-made explosive tubes, filled with a mixture of gunpowder, with a wick at their end) are set on fire on the central square, offering a fantastical show.
