Ierapetra is the southernmost town of Crete, and was created in the first centuries of the Cretan civilization, but it flourished during the Minoan civilization and the Roman occupation. It was always considered a strategic location, since its port was the easiest access to Egypt. During the Arabic occupation, the Arabs wanted to protect the town, so they built a fortress and a palace, which still dominates the harbor. In Ierapetra, you can visit the picturesque old town and you will see the house where, according to rumors, Napoleon spent a night; the museum next to the Town Hall and the Kale Fortress at the port’s entrance. Strolling down the coastal streets, you will find many choices for shopping, dining and entertainment.
