Located in the easternmost part of the island, Sitia is a well-developed tourist town with many infrastructures, like the only airport in eastern Crete. In antiquity, Sitia was the main rival of Ierapetra and flourished during the period 1531-1613AD. Also, this is where the great Cretan artist and one of the most significant representatives of the Greek literature, Vitsentzos Kornaros, lived and worked. Although, the inhabitants work mainly on agriculture, the coastal boulevard offers a wide variety of taverns, shops and cafeterias. You can also visit the Kazarma Fort and its two museums.
