This small, amphitheatrically built city is extended from the edge of the sea, where the biggest port of the island, Kato Vathi, is located, until up the hill. Up the hill you will find plenty of traditional and neoclassical buildings, traditional settlements, the byzantine temple of Agios Antonios, the “Lion” starring at the sea and many places to eat or have a coffee and a drink at the city center. Vathi, divided into Ano Vathi and Kato Vathi, is the capital of the island, so it gathers all the administrative and state services.
In the city entrance, in the area Malagari, you will see a nicely restored stone building, the Museum of Samian Wine. Walking around the city you will meet some other beautiful buildings, like the Archaeological Museum of Samos, which hosts architectural parts of the Iraion temple.
The gigantic Kouros of Samos is hosted in the last hall of the museum, after the German archaeologists managed to reconstruct it, piece by piece. Kouros is one of the most beautiful findings with three times the natural size dimensions; during the ancient years it used to adorn the Holy Street starting from Iraion and ending up to Pythagorio. Following the paths of the city you will get to Pythagoras Square and the Municipal Garden, the Byzantine Museum, the Municipal Gallery or even the monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, to enjoy the view to the Asia Minor coast.
