Despite the outburst of frequent fires, Samos is one of the most “green” islands of the Aegean Sea. 21, 4% of the island’s land is covered by pine forests. We mainly meet pine forests in the mountains Kerkis and the lush mountain Karvounis or Ampelos. The biggest forests are in Ampelos, Kerkis has less on its eastern and northwestern slopes, and some clusters can be seen in other areas. However, in Kerkis you will see some rare species of black pine trees, junipers and cedars. The two canyons leading to Mikro and Megalo Seitani belong to the European network Natura 2000.
