Women with or without headscarf, men enjoying a waterpipe (narghile) and others preparing a “soutzouk loukoum” just right in front of you. Here Greeks and Muslims live in complete harmony. Komotini is the capital of the prefecture and with a population of 46000 people, combines two different cultures. Its long history dates back to the ancient times and reaches up to the modern history of the country. However, the most incisive period was the Ottoman Occupation that left her trace all over the place. In the city you will see buildings and mosques of that era. Apart from the buildings, a living trace of that era is the big number of Muslims living in the area. Turkish shops, recipes as well as lots of sweets can be found in every corner of Komotini. The city has, of course, lots of Greeks that increase during the winter months as there are also lots of universities and schools. In the city centre you will have the chance to wander around the old market with its shops, the pictures of past and future, the scent of freshly baked coffee and sweets. Moreover, you can visit the Spathi (sword) monument, the municipal park, the 21-acres forest of Agia Paraskevi that serves as a recreational area for locals and visitors. The nightlife is also busy as the city is full of students.
