A specialty for the prefecture and the city of Komotini are the different Turkish sweets, which are mainly made with syrup and gelatin cubes (soutzouk loukoum). You will also find several taverns and restaurants with Greek and Eastern dishes (lachmatzoun) not only in the capital but also in the province (Maroneia, Sapes, Iasmos, Sostis, Fanari, and Imeros). If you find yourselves near the sea, you can taste the seafood, which you can combine with local wine or tsipouro. Finally, the locals produce lots of nuts, which you can buy all over the prefecture.
