It is a coastal town of 2,500 inhabitants on the northern coast of the Corinthian Gulf. It is located nearby Mount Parnassos and Mount Elikonas and has beautiful clean beaches; an ideal destination combining sea and mountain.
Strabo, Pausanias as well as various archaeological findings confirm that it existed since the ancient times. It must have been inhabited since 1600 BC and it probably coincides with the ancient city of Kyparissos to which Homer refers, while after the 9th century BC it appears by the name Antikyra thriving until 346 BC when it was destroyed by Philip II of Macedon.
However, the city continued its history through time. A basilica of the 6th century with a mosaic floor is still preserved since the Christian period.
Another name under which it was known until the 19th century is Aspra Spitia (meaning “white houses”), which is now related to a neighboring village for the workers of an aluminum factory operating in the region.
Today you will find taverns and cafes along the harbor, you can swim in the beautiful beach of Agios Isidoros and combine a visit to the mountain with a smell of sea.
