During the ancient years Erkyna was said to be the nymph of Elikonas, the forest that was worshiped by the locals as a minor deity of nature and vegetation. Pausanias refers to details about the river’s name. “It is said that the nymph Erkyna used to play here with the daughter of Dimitra, Persephone. She was holding a goose that escaped from her hands and found shelter in a cave.”
Persephone found the goose and water started flowing at that exact spot, giving River Erkyna its name. Nowadays the route across the river is especially interesting, with several stone bridges created during the Turkish occupation, old buildings, terraces and channels.
