This preserved, picturesque settlement is located at a highly protected natural harbor with a small island. The safe bay appears in the poems of Homer as the harbor of Fortynos and is an ideal place for anchoring thanks to its long and narrow shape. A characteristic image of the bay is the Lazareto Island with the small chapel of the Savior that was built there in 1668. Vathy became the capital of Ithaki in 1500 A.C and has about 1800 residents.
