Leonidio is the capital of Kynouria province of the regional unit of Arcadia and one of the oldest marine cities in Greece of about 4.000 inhabitants. It's the heart of Tsakonia, an outstanding area where the Tsakonian dialect is still spoken, an alteration of the ancient Doric dialect, which is estimated to be the most ancient Greek language that has ever been spoken. Tsakonians have maintained their own unique traditions, customs, dances and songs up until now. The Tsakonian dance is as ancient as the dialect. It’s a round, accurate and solemn dance, which represents, as argued by Simon Karas, the battle of Apollo with Python, the sacred chthonic snake.
Leonidio is built on a fertile valley that ends up in a pebbly beach with cozy taverns. The local architecture is unique in Arcadia. The most remarkable examples are the impressive tower houses, built in the beginning of the 19th century, and, later on, the unique Tsakonian architecture, the Tower of Tsikaliotis (1808).
Surrounded by the fragrant odor of fruit trees that flourish on the edges of Parnonas and the ocean breeze, Leonidio has an insular character that calms you down from the very beginning.
Astros
The onshore Astros is the place where the rural houses of most inhabitants of Tripoli are, and, therefore, the summertime is full of life. There are lovely beaches and beautiful sceneries that are combined with an extremely generous nightlife. Its castle is imposing, and many events take place all summer in the coastal theater. In the landlocked Astros, a few kilometers deeper in the inland, there are all the essential stores and facilities, as well as the well-appointed houses of the courteous inhabitants.
