Easter in Tripolis has always been special. On the night of the Anastasi (Resurrection), magiritsa and tsoukalokafto -red wine boiled with honey, apples and spices- are served in Areos Square. Lambs are put on spits early in the morning and are served during the day with Easter eggs and bagels.
In Leonidion, on the night of the Anastasi (Resurrection), handmade air balloons are released in the sky and the spring night is garnished by their light. Since the early 20th century, this unique Easter custom turns Leonidion, the capital of Tsakonia, into a remarkable scenery.
On the night of the Anastasi (Resurrection), right after the "Christos Anesti", hundreds of handmade colorful air balloons fill the sky. The air balloons, made of shin-bone and paper, are "triggered off" by cloths saturated with oil and are driven in the sky from the five chapelries of the village. Most of them fly very high and look like bright stars. This unique spectacle is repeated in the main square of Leonidion on Easter Day. This custom has its roots in the memories of the well-seen local sailors, who have witnessed similar customs in Asian countries.
