Kastro is a small village with the characteristics of a fort, built on the edge of a cliff (280m above the sea) in order to provide shelter and protection from pirate invasions. Today the only remaining part of the castle is called Paraporti. It gathers most of the social life of the island with its cafes, shops and restaurants offering traditional food. White-washed courtyards and narrow streets, potted basil plants and bougainvilleas, old mansions, traditional houses and of course, churches. If you visit the church of Pantanassa, you will see the carved wooden iconostasis as well as important icons, which in summer months are taken to the Byzantine Museum of the village. If you are in Kastro, you should definitely go up the steps and visit Chorio. This is the oldest and most scenic village on the island. A village with small roads which lead around houses with little courtyards and flowers all the way up the hill. Whichever little road you choose to follow, you will find beauty.
