There are only a few towns that managed to maintain their liveliness and develop although they are located between high mountains and away from city centres. Metsovo is one of them and this is evident visitor once you reach this town. The population is 3200 residents and most of them are young people.
It is located at an altitude of 1160 meters and its name probably originates from the Slavic words “metska” (=bear) and “ovo” (=village).
Its residents work in the husbandry, cheese manufacturing – here the known types of cheese metsovone and metsovela are made – and tourism business, while some of them are loggers.
Nikolaos Stournaras, Eleni and Michail Tositsas and Georgios Averof were born here and established the Tech School of Athens. That is the reason why it is called National Metsovio University. Averof offered a big part of his collection of paintings to the museum which operates since 1988 in Metsovo. You can also visit the Folklore Museum that is housed in the Averof Manor.
The residents have taken care of Metsovo’s touristic development and as a result will offer you lots of choices for food and accommodation apart from the sights.
There are three small ski centres only a stone’s throw from the town.
