Α graphic town, rich in history. Its name originates from the words ‘kales’(good) ‘vrises’(taps) and dates from the time of Frank occupation. Kalavrita is connected with the Byzantine Empire since it was commanded by the Palaiologon family. It’s a town that is linked to the revolutions and the uprisings of 1770 and of 1821 (led by Germanos of Patras). Kalavrita was bombed by Turkish troops and yet despite all this, the period of the town’s history that is blood written is the time of WWII with the massacre and burning of the town by the German occupators.
Today, Kalavrita is considered one of the most cosmopolitan towns of Achaea. The main attraction for those visiting Kalavrita is the ski center located at Chelmos, at the foot of which the town of Kalavrita is built.
The liveliness, healthy climate, shops with local products, stone-built houses and of course the ski center, constitute the modern town of Kalavrita, which you will get a better feeling of when walking through its paved streets. You will definitely be impressed by its tourist movement and understand why Kalavrita is considered one of the best winter destinations. Crowd of hotels, traditional hostels, restaurants, cafes and in general a rich night life dominates through the narrow streets. However, beyond this type of entertainment, the area’s sightseeing represents the town’s several centuries long history which should surely not be forgotten.
Whether you reach the city by car or with the cog, which is considered a unique experience, the railway station welcomes you at the entrance of Kalavrita. The lovely stone building of OSE (train station) and a coffee under the trees is an excellent start for your excursion. Moving on to the central paved street of Kalavrita you will meet the Public School of Kalavrita, which now hosts the Municipal Museum of the Holocaust of Kalavrita. Reaching the central square you can see the Metropolitan Temple, restored after its destructions during the Greek-Turkish and Greek-German wars. On your way towards the ski center it is necessary to stop at Kapi Hill to see the Place of Sacrifice. Nearby excursions, such as the Mega Spileo, the Spileo Limnon (Cave of the Lakes), the beautiful village of Zachlorou, the Planitero, the archaeological places of the ancient Lousi and the ancient Kleitor, will give you a complete idea of the town of Kalavrita.
