A prefecture located next to the northeastern borders of Greece. Its history dates back to 10000 B.C, continues in the Neolithic era, in the age of Copper, the age of Iron, in the Roman times and reaches up to the Ottoman Occupation, the Bulgarian raids and of course the wars against Greece. Each and every period has left its own trace something that can easily be seen in the archaeological findings. The Ottoman Occupation still remains the most intense period as its traces can be found all over the prefecture.
As far as the prefecture’s name is concerned, there are two different versions. The first version has to do with the derivation of the name Rodopi, which in Greek means “red look”. It starts from the fact that the evergreen plain and mountains of Rodopi turn red when the sunlight falls on it. The other version dates back to the 6th century. It is said that a girl from Thrace called Rodopi was sold to the king of Egypt. He was so amazed by her beauty that decided to marry her and named her birthplace Rodopi giving them lots of privileges in order to honor her.
Because of its location near the Egnatia road, which was a passage for Istanbul, the Rodopi prefecture became a meeting point even from the ancient times something that boosted its economy and helped it develop through the years. Its capital, Komotini, is a versatile city with lots of different residents. Not only in Komotini, but also in the whole prefecture you will see Greeks and Muslims living in harmony. The latter have their own shops with traditional products and dishes as well as Muslim mosques. While driving on the Egnatia road, you will have the chance to gaze at the endless almond fields and biotopes that you will encounter on your way to Komotini.
The prefecture that combines the natural, evergreen scenery with the mountains, plain and sea can impress any visitor that gets there. Although its beaches are not famous as of other parts of Greece, they widely offer their crystal clear waters. If you are not interested in swimming, then drive your car or hike on the hillsides of Ismaros (European hiking trail E6) and Papikio. Explore the byzantine monasteries as well as the archaeological findings and enjoy the nature that surrounds you. Go down to the lakes Ismarida and Vistonida and observe the rare bird species that find shelter there.
Take the chance to explore the picturesque settlements on the foothills of the mountains as well as the coasts where you can also swim. The distances are quite short and it gives you the chance to explore the whole prefecture while at the same time you fill up with oxygen and energy. Especially for the lovers of nature, not only Rodopi but the green sceneries of northern Greece as well will be unforgettable.
