The Dikteon Andron and the birth of Zeus: Although, it is widely known that Zeus was born in the Ideon Andron in Psiloritis, there is another version according to which Rea gave birth in the Dikteon Andron in the plateau of Lasithi, in order to save Zeus from Kronos. Zeus was born there and, then, he was moved to the Ideon Andron. During his transfer, it is said that his navel fell near Karteros River, east of Heraklion. According to a weaker version of the myth, Zeus was not only born, but also raised in the Dikteon Andron in Lasithi.
Harpies: Besides the birth of Zeus, the Dikteon Andron is also known from the myth of the Harpies. Harpies were mythical creatures with a woman's head, the body of a bird, and were messengers of Hades. According to the myth, they lived in the Dikteon Andron in the plateau of Lasithi. The most known Harpies were: Podargi, Aello, Ocypeti and Keleno. Harpies snatched children and human souls and, therefore, they were depicted on the graves holding the soul of the dead. Furthermore, the most known story about these creatures is that Zeus sent them as avengers to the foreteller Fineas, whom he wanted to punish for revealing his plans to the humans. So, the Harpies smeared him and took his food away in order to starve him. Fineas was saved by the Argonauts and the Harpies were forced to stay in the Dikteon Andron for eternity and never bother Fineas again. Some believe that they were the embodiment of the Cretan goddess and were named by many as tornadoes. Another duty of theirs was to deliver the souls of those who had committed crimes and should be punished to the Erinyes.
Talos: Another myth, which is mentioned not only in Lasithi but in Crete in general, is the myth of Talos. He was a mythical giant hero, made of bronze that guarded the whole island and went round the coastline three times a day. Whenever he saw hostile ships, he threw huge rocks against them and sunk them. When he had to encounter intruders on the island, he burnt them by hugging them with his burning body. Talos was destroyed by the Astronauts, who managed to kill him with the help of Medea. The symbolism of this bronze hero is dual: it symbolized the great development of the Minoans in the production of bronze, and the justice, which was very important to the Minoans.
