The products of eastern Crete are the most well-known of the island, and many of them are exported overseas. The olive oil of the district, which is considered to be one of the best worldwide, is exported to many countries. Last but not least, the olive oil of Kritsas village has been awarded with international prices and quality honors. In Sitia, you can find fine wine, raki, tasty traditional sweets and high-quality honey.
Moreover, several fruit and vegetables are produced in the district and mostly in Ierapetra, which has been described as the market-garden of Europe since large amounts of these products are exported abroad. What is more, pulses and potatoes are produced in the Plateau, while you can find savory cheese products in the entire district. Those that are more daring can taste snails (or "kochlious" as they are called in Crete) in a traditional taverna and you never know, you might love them.
All the above traditional products can be found in stores throughout the district and obtain them or just taste them in traditional taverns of the district.
