Festival of Agios Simios: Every year, during the three-day holiday for the Holy Spirit, the town of Messolonghi is turned into a special festival. The whole center of the town is filled with traditional music and from Friday morning the locals start eating, drinking and dancing. They dance “Aisimiotikos”, a dance which is consisted of a repeated move that reaches up to ecstacy. On Saturday “parees”, local expression, meaning the groups of the men of the city, are going to wear “fustanellas and doulamades”, traditional costumes and after making a memorial service in the Garden of the Heroes they head towards the Monastery of Ai Simios. Also horse riders with their horses from all over the prefecture come to participate in the festival, always under the sounds of tabors and flutes. Eating, drinking and dancing keeps on all night long around the monastery. In the morning, there takes place a memorial service for those who died in the Exodus. In the afternoon of the same day they return to Messolonghi, where this special festival continues for one more night. In the unique Ai Simios Festival the wine is endless, while tabors and flutes keep playing the repeated rhythm of “Aisimiotikos”.
Celebration for the Exodus- Sunday before Easter: It is a very moving and with high folkloric interest parade, where groups with different apparels and bands from all over Greece take place. The Exodus in 1821 took place the Sunday before Easter. In the honor of these events a major parade takes place one weekend before Easter. On Saturday night there is a night parade and a memorial service, while the picture of the Exodus is transported from Saint Spiridon to the Garden of the Heroes. There happens the representation of the blasting by Kapsalis. During the exit, those who couldn’t move where gathered in Kapsalis house, where they all together blew themselves up. On the next day, the slow-paced parade takes place, and the picture returns to its place. People of all ages participate, from really young children to elderly people. It is really touching that no matter what the weather conditions may be, even with cold, rain and wind, almost all the residents of Messolonghi honor the heroic history of their ancestors, as viewers or paraders.
Festival of Agia Agathi: Every summer, on the 18th-20th of August Aetoliko and Stamna live under the rhythms of traditional music. The locals honor Agia Agathi and set up a big feast. It is a traditional, religious and historic festival, with the participants dancing under the sounds of tabors and flutes.
Halkounia: After preparations of almost two months, the “war” begins on Holy Friday. After going to the church, the whole residents of Agrinio gather in the central square to watch the spectacle. They gather, halkounia are set on fire and the battle between the two teams begins. Ηalkounia are self-made explosive tubes, filled with a mixture of gunpowder, with a wick at their end. The two teams compete about who of them two has created the best “chalkouni”. This custom is dating back to Turkocracy and is widely known all over Greece.
Achillia: These events last three days and are organized by the municipality of Agrinio with the cooperation of the cultural and athletic club of the community of Grammatiko on the holidays of the Holy Spirit. The events include nights with traditional music, theatrical plays, exhibitions and cycling expeditions.
Naval battle of Nafpaktos: The municipality of Nafpaktos organizes every October different events in order to honor the historical sea battle that took place in Nafpaktos, as it was one of the most important wins against the Turkish navy. The peak of the festival is the reenactment of the battle in the Venetian harbor. Diplomatic missions from the countries that took part in the battle come to participate.
Greek dances festival: Since 2010, the Greek dances festival takes place every July in Astakos with the participation of folk dancing groups from all over Greece. After the presentation of the groups a big fest is set up on the beach of Astakos.
Oiniades Festival: The Municipality of Messolonghi organizes during July and August a “cultural summer”, with musical and theatrical performances constituting the festival’s program. The ancient theatre of Oiniades is successfully hosting performances since 1987.
