"Loukoumia" delights: "Loukoumia" delights are the reference "treat" of the island. They are available in several flavors such as mastic, bergamot, vanilla, clove, cinnamon and coconut, but the classic traditional delight has rose flavor with whole almonds as a filling, small dainties introduced to the island by the Chian refugees. According to tradition, they are handmade and fresh, prepared with unalloyed ingredients. Water, sugar, corn flour and aromatic ingredients are used to make them. The legend says that it is the water of the island that makes the difference, since it is brackish. In any case, these delights are the best gift for friends and relatives!
The halvah-pie of Syros: A round and novel dainty, made with very simple ingredients: Sugar, almonds, vanilla, local honey, glucose, meringue and an experienced confectioner from Syros are needed for the making of this sweet, which takes elbow grease and hack value, since it is merely handmade. Taste it while wandering around in the alleys of the island!
"Louza": Louza, the distinctive ham of the Cyclades, could not be missing from Syros. It is made from pork meat, that is left in a marinade of wine and spices before wrapping it in bowels and hang it for two whole months to dry and season.
"San Mihalis": San Mihalis is the most expensive cheese in Greece. It is made from pasteurized cow's milk, so it has oyster-white color with a salty and spicy flavor. It is hard-boiled, cylindrical, with small pinholes and a characteristic scent.
"San Tzortzis": You can taste San Trortzis in a Women Cahoots. It is like parmesan, but it has less fat since it is produced by semi-fatless cow's milk. Its scent and its spicy flavor will amaze you!
Syros has and other great products, such as skordoloukanika (sausages with garlic), dried tomatoes, spicy "kopanisti" (cheese), gruyere and mizithra (soft cheese), which are the ideal dainties to enjoy your ouzo.
Since the most greenhouses in the Cyclades are in Syros, you should definitely taste its organic products, such as tomatoes, caper, fennel, green onions, wild greens, melons, grapes, mandarins and figs. The traditional thyme-honey will blend incredibly with the local teas found in the cafes of the island. As far as the taverns is concerned, you should taste baked pork with cabbage and fennel and a bottle of local wine from the vineyards of the island.
For vegetarians and non, other recipes, such as kaparosalates (caper salads), maintanosalates (parsley salads), pancakes with caper and the famous "frisoyres", which are pancakes with honey, milk and spices, will carry you off your feet!
