Kos is the third largest island of the Dodecanese, with fertile volcanic soil, rich history and a vibrant life, very close to Turkey. From the first visit to Kos, you get the impression of making a journey through time, from the ancient years to the byzantine years and from the era of the knights to the Turkish occupation and the vibrant rhythms of today. The island is the meeting place of many cultures, eastern and western, and an important passage since many centuries. Kos is the island of origin of the father of medicine, Hippocrates, and this is the reason why you will see one of the biggest hospitals of the ancient world, called Asclepion. The capital of the island, the homonymous city of Kos, is offering all kinds of comforts you would expect from a big city, but maintains the special island atmosphere.
If you leave the city behind and head to a village you will notice a huge contrast of lifestyles, as the locals choose to preserve their traditions and customs. Kos has a fertile land, beautiful sandy beaches, thermal baths and especially developed tourism infrastructure that attracts many tourists during the summer period, particularly travelers from Western Europe. The large amount of visitors every summer is the reason why the hotel infrastructure of the island has been radically developed during the last decades. The island is suggested for those who want to spend their holiday in action, having an adrenaline rush thanks to water sports and wild nightlife, as well as for those who want to relax, enjoy the nature and the healing energy of the island. The choice is yours.
