The Ancient Agora, as indicated by its name, was the place that gathered crowds of Athenians for their purchases, discussions and philosophy.Nowadays, it is a wonderful archeological site where lush trails tour you around the remains of the Odeon, the Arcade of Attalos, Tholo where the rulers of the city met, the Temple of Hephaestus and many more.It is one of the "do not miss" places of the city, not only for the exhibits but mostly for the calmness that emits the once bustling market-place.In the Ancient Agora is also located the small but interesting Museum of Ancient Agora, which is housed in the well-preserved Arcade of Attalos.Built around 150 BC by Attalos II of Pergamos to honor Karneados, a Stoic philosopher and teacher, it housed the shops of the ancient market-place and was fully restored in 1950 operating as a museum since then.Items from everyday life as well as exhibits related to the functioning of the democratic regime, such as the resolution in 337 BC in favor of democracy, where, on its anaglyph, Democracy crowns the municipality, are displayed in the museum. Opening Hours: Summer (from 1 April): Monday-Sunday: 08:00-15:00
The Museum of the Arch of Attalos: Monday: 11:00-15:00, Tuesday-Sunday: 08:00-15:00.
The first floor of the Museum will be closed on Sundays and public holidays.
