In antiquity, to the northwest of the city of Athens was one of the largest attic municipalities, the municipality of Kerameon, which was named after the ceramists, who had their workshops there, taking advantage of the clayey banks of the small river, Eridanos. The area was the main place of production of the famous attic vases, but due to the fact that it flooded very often making its inhabitation difficult, the most important cemetery of ancient Athens was gradually created there. The construction of the modern city might have covered the biggest part of the old attic municipality, but it has not spread over the ancient cemetery. So, the current archeological site offers exceptional conditions for archeological research and accessibility to the public.Eridanos River, flowing nowadays within the archaeological site, had disappeared for centuries, buried by fills, until 1960 when it was revealed by the excavations. In the space on either side of the river pass through two major roads, part of the fortification of the ancient city with two monumental gates, as well as residential, devotional and tomb monuments dated from the prehistoric to Byzantine times. The oldest tombs are dated from the early Bronze age (2700-2000 BC).Among the important Athenian vessels found in graves, is also the famous "DipylonOinochoe" with the earliest Greek alphabetic inscription (second half of 8th century BC).In the small museum located in the area are hosted the findings from researches.Several of the tombs have remained in their original place since antiquity, but due to air pollution most sculptures have been transferred in the museum and identical copies have been inserted in their place. There you will see the colossal bull from the burial grounds of Dionysus from Kollytos, which is the landmark of the archaeological site of Keramikos.
