The Cathedral of Athens is located on the homonym square at Mitropoleos Street. It is dedicated to the Feast of the Annunciation of the Theotokos and is a three-aisled Basilica with a dome.It was founded in 1842 and completed in 20 years, after a radical modification of the original designs of the Danish architect Hansen by the D. Zezos and Fr. Boulanger. The style differences that arose due to the four phases of its construction have resulted in an unspecified architecture. The murals inside the church, works of SpyridonGiallinas and of Alexander Seitz are of the Byzantine style, while its decoration was done by the painter Konstantinos Fanellis from Izmir.Next to the Cathedral lies the chapel of Panagia Gorgoepikoos, also known as the Small Metropolis. It was built in the late 12th century, on the ruins of an ancient temple, and is dedicated to Panagia Gorgoepikoos and Agios Eleftherios. The most impressive thing about this chapel is its facade, which is covered with marble slabs (front side), as well as the multitude of grand reliefs incorporated into its upper part dated from the ancient and Byzantine times, which have carven crosses among the pagan motifs.
