Walking down Ermou Street, one of the busiest shopping streets in Athens, you will encounter a Byzantine church with climactic roofs, a remnant of another era. This is the well-known Kapnikarea.During the construction of Ermou Street was discussed the possibility of its transfer to another spot, a scenario that fortunately did not go through.Kapnikarea was built in the mid-11th century and it was probably named after its owners "kapnikarii", the Byzantine collectors of the building. The iconographies embellishing its interior were done by the painters Kontoglos and Papanikolaos during the 40's.
