The Monastery of Kaisariani is located in the homonym region, at the foot of Hymettus, and is one of the most important Byzantine monuments in Attica. It was built in the 11th century and flourished in the late 12thand the early 13th century being a remarkable spiritual center in which important scholars of the era were based. The financial vigor of the monastery was primarily due to the production of honey, for which the area was famous since antiquity. The grand library of the monastery was destroyed after the outbreak of the Revolution of 1821.The church dedicated to the Presentation of the Theotokos is a typical Byzantine building of the 11th century, while the chapel of Agios Antonios, the narthex and the bell tower were later additions. In the interior of the church you will be impressed by the four ancient columns supporting the dome as well as the murals of the early 18th century. The area around the monastery is verdant with pine trees, platans and other trees, while there are many springs with running water. It is rich in archeological findings, mainly from the classical and Roman times. It is also worth noting that a building older than the church has been found with a built-in representation of a pre-Christian sculpture of Rhea or Cyveli and the head of a ram.The Monastery of Kaisariani is now open to the public and operates as an archeological site.
Opening Hours: daily 08:30-15:00 except for Monday
