It is called the neighborhood of the Gods and that’s what the beautiful Plaka is indeed. The most picturesque district of the city lies about the northern part of the Acropolis, with the bulk of it under the protection of UNESCO as an historic preservation zone. The landscape here comprises neoclassical buildings next to ancient ruins, Byzantine churches atop ancient temples, cobblestone streets, quaint cafes and restaurants, galleries and shops. Mostly limited to foot traffic, the calm district is ideal for walking, admiration, contemplation and reflection, on the same roads where Socrates once conversed with his students, under the sacred rock of the Acropolis that continues its perpetual journey through the ages. At the highest point below the archaeological site of the Acropolis, one will meet a cluster of houses, exhibiting the characteristic Cycladic architecture. The neighborhood is called the Anafiotika since the houses were built by craftsmen from the isle of Anafi, invited by the Bavarian King Otto to build the onetime Royal Palace that now houses the Parliament. A stroll through the tiny whitewashed alleys will take you on a mental voyage to the Cyclades, yet at the highest point the view to the north of the city brings you back to the reality of Athens.
Now and forever the ‘do not miss’ of Athens, the area is one of the main tourist attractions, and enchants all those who visit it.
