It is said that the Athenians were thinking to build the Acropolis here at first but, eventually, the opposite rock was preferred and therefore the hill made do with the privilege of the exceptional panoramic view and the monument in honor of the benefactor of the city, Gaius Julius Antiochus Filopappos. At the foot of the hill, in the grove facing the Acropolis was found a prison, which is argued to be the prison where Socrates drank the hemlock. During the 50's, the architect Pikionis embellished the hill with paved paths and stone seats at suitable points overlooking the sacred rock turning it into an irresistible choice for a walk and brown study. The hill covers a pretty large extent with several variations suitable not only for a walk but also for sports, since there are trails for cycling and running as well as climbing routes on the south part of the hill. On the southwest side of the hill, there is also the theater of Dora Stratou, where several cultural events are hosted during the summer.
