The Hellenic Children’s Museum is a non-profit organization that serves the public interest. The museum was founded in 1987 in Athens by a group of young scientists on the initiative of Sophia Rok-Mela, a teacher whose specialty is museum education.
The Children’s Museum is one of the first museum experiences for children, where they’re surrounded by an environment adjusted to their needs and capabilities. It is addressed to children up to 12 years old, parents, children and anyone else interested in children’s development.
The philosophy behind the Children's Museum is based on the belief that real objects, actual experiences and play, support and reinforce the learning procedure.
In the Children’s Museum the learning procedure is supported by real objects, concrete experiences and play. The educational projects, the exhibits and each activity of the museum are designed to develop children’s creativity, initiative and critical thinking, always aiming to discover knowledge in a pleasant way.
The exhibits and the projects are related to natural sciences, arts, culture, the actuality but also the everyday life of children. They are used to support lifelong learning within the philosophical framework “learning how to learn”, in order to help children understand their place in the world where they live in and reinforce the parents-children/students-teachers cooperation and interaction.
The Children’s Museum offers educational programs for organized groups (nurseries, kindergartens, primary schools) on weekdays and for visitors on the weekend. Each time two subjects are presented: one for ages 3-6 and one for ages 6-12. The accompanying adults are free to participate, with a view to create an atmosphere where younger and older people experience together common creation, learning and entertainment.
In the museum you will also find the “Material House” (“Ylikopoleio”), an innovation by the Hellenic Children’s Museum. “Ylikopoleio” is the intersection point of industry, education and creation and highlights the social dimension of the concept of recycling. People of all ages are given the opportunity to find cheap materials for their constructions, giving life to “useless material”.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday: 10:00-14:00 (you’d better make a call before your visit, just in case a school group has arranged a meeting), Saturday and Sunday 10:00 – 15:00
