The Museum of Children’s Art is a pioneering museum, one of the very few worldwide that exhibits exclusively drawings and three dimensional artworks created by 5 to 14 years old children.
The Museum of Children’s Art focuses on education through art. It suggests a new model of Museum-School, aiming to promote the uniqueness of children’s art. It is addressed to children and adults (parents, teacher, artists) and seeks cooperation between scientists, researchers and anyone interested in children’s art.
Its collections include 7.000 works of art and are annually enriched.
Its aim since 1994, the year it was founded, is the study and promotion of the uniqueness of children’s art, the cultivation of children’s aesthetic ability as well as the cooperation with scientists and institutions interested in children’s art, in Greece and abroad.
From its very beginning, the museum has organized various important exhibitions promoting children’s art in Greece, held at the Museum of Cycladic Art, the Basilica of St. Mark in Heraklion of Crete, the University of Athens, the Old Parliament House, the Hellenic American Union, the Athens Concert Hall and abroad at the United Nations Headquarters, the Children’s Art Museum in Oslo, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, the Permanent Delegation of Greece at the European Parliament in Strasbourg and the Children’s Art Museum in Japan.
The Museum’s collections are enriched annually. They include 7.000 artworks from all around Greece, some of them being really special: awarded by the Children’s Painting Competitions organized by the Museum, participations in international exhibitions, artworks from Art Workshops for children and people with disabilities held in its building, games created of useless materials by children from Africa, artworks created by children during the period of the German occupation of Greece and the first samples of artistic illustration of an animate figure by Kalash children.
Drawing artworks from its collections, the Museum renews its exhibits frequently, highlighting different themes each time.
Under the guidance of specially trained educators, 5-12 years old children and families with 2,5-4 years old children have the opportunity to participate in art workshops with duration of one or eight months, or in two-hour-projects on the occasion of collaborations, significant moments in the history of art or festive themes during holiday periods.
The Museum’s gift shop offers exclusive books, art games, postcards, posters and small art souvenirs with artworks from its collections.
