Opposite the National Garden at VasilissisSofias Street is located the main building of the Benaki Museum, founded in 1930. The building, in which it is housed, was the house of AntonisBenakis, the founder of the museum, which after configurations took its current form and can now house the permanent exhibition and several other events. Its permanent collection depicts the evolution of Hellenism from antiquity till the Asia Minor disaster. Historical heirlooms of EleftheriosVenizelos and old children's games are included among its approximately 33.000 exhibits.
