The most famous cave of Attiki is located on the southwest side of Penteli, and is linked with a number of local legends. Located at an altitude of 720 meters, the opening is about 45x62 meters. There is evidence of religious use in antiquity. In all probability it was later used by ascetics who left behind them, near the entrance of the cave, the chapels of St. Spyridon and St. Nicholas, whose substantial 13th-century frescoes are still preserved in the Byzantine Museum of Athens. Popular naming rights fell to the notorious bandit Davelis, who appears to have had his headquarters there. Ascending Pentelis Avenue, turn left towards Nea Penteli and continuing upward towards the top, there is a dirt road leading to the cave.
