12 kilometers northeast of Athens, Penteli (Pentelikon Oros), rises to 1,109 meters. From antiquity, the mountain has been known for the exceptional quality of its marble, which continued to be quarried there until modern times.
Most of the fifth century monuments adorning the city of Athens were constructed of Pentelic marble. A series of conveniently timed fires have facilitated development in the erstwhile protected zone, altering the landscape dramatically.
Key attractions of the region are the Penteli Monastery, and the Cave of Davelis, previously also a place of Pan-worship , and later taking its name from the notorious 19th century brigand Christos Natsios, aka Davelis, who maintained a hideout there. From the ‘forest’ roads, (the forest has burned nowadays) one can tour the mountain by foot or bike. There are tales about oddities in the electromagnetic field of the mountain, which supposedly cause objects to climb autonomously up the inclined road.
