Kastoria Perfecture is located in northwestern Greece and is uniquely beautiful; Mostly covered by Mount Gramos and Mount Vitsi, as well as Aliakmonas River. Given that it is situated near the borders of Greece, it has suffered many battles with other nations but also the Greek Civil War.
The vivid, picturesque Kastoria, built next to Orestiada Lake, is the capital of the homonymous prefecture and one of the cities you should visit, as this beautiful place offers a variety of sights for you to admire.
In this region, you also have the opportunity to visit the village of Dispilio, one of the oldest 7,000-year-old lakeside settlements and the 20 million-year-old petrified forest of Nostimo, which proves that this region was once covered by sea where prehistoric sharks used to swim!
Kastoria is usually covered with snow during winter so its no surprise that there is also a ski resort. The Mount Vitsi Ski Center, might be small yet great for excursions. From the other hand Aliakmonas River is an excellent choice for the hot days of summer. Besides, each year, thousands of visitors gather on its banks to attend one of the biggest music festivals; the River Party in Nestorio. Each season is ideal to visit Kastoria Prefecture and enjoy its beauties.
