It is the largest river in Greece, with a total length of 300 km, entirely in Greek territory. Its sources are located in Mount Voio and before flowing into Thermaikos Gulf is passes from Kastoria, Grevena and Kozani. Its Delta hosts important habitats.
Its name is a compound word; it derives from "als" (“salt” in Greek) and "akmon" (“anvil”). According to Greek mythology Aliakmon was one of the river gods, son of Oceanus and Tethys and according to the writer Pliny (23-79 AD), all sheep that drank water from the river used to change color and become white. The crystal clear waters, the rich flora and fauna and the frequent alternations of the landscape impress all visitors of Aliakmonas River.
Those seeking some adventure should know that Aliakmonas is ideal for rafting both for beginners and for more experienced athletes.
