The Castle of Chora, onetime watchtower of the island of Kythira, and now a picturesque ghost town, was built by the Venetian conquerors during the 13th to 16th centuries Strategically positioned at the edge of the hill, it oversees three seas, the Aegean, the Myrtoan, and the Ionian. Remnants from the era of its habitation, (not so far in the past since the last residents left after the German seizure of the castle grounds), are the two-story mansions, the Governor’s official residence, the prisons, the sturdy water tower, and the churches. The church of the Panagia (Virgin Mary) Myrtidiotissa, located in Governors Square, was built initially during the 16th century, but became an Orthodox church in 1806. Surrounded by the sempervivum that adorn the abrupt cliffs, this proud Castle stands as though untouched by the ages. The site offers a stunning view over Kapsali.
