This monastery was built in 1840, under the sponsorship of Theodoros Kolokotronis, hero of the 1821-28 War of Independence. He returned to the island to make good on the oath that he swore to the Virgin Mary, that if he should defeat the Turks and free Greece from the dominion of the Ottoman Empire, he would honor her by building a church. Built on top of a mountain in the west central part of the island, the spot offers an incredible view of the Myrtoan Sea.
