Elesa, daughter of Elladios, fled to the island from the Peloponnese. Her father had disowned her because of her Christian faith. In 375 AD, she was caught and killed by him. For her sacrifice she became a local saint, and a monastery was built in her honor. It is located on one of the highest points of the island, and has grown slowly over the years to its present form.
