The chapel of St. John “en Krimno” is perched on a rock, as implied by its name, at an altitude of about 100 meters, and is located in a cave above Kapsali. To get there you have to arm yourself with patience, because you’ll end up climbing 130 stone steps. The view over the settlements of Chora and Kapsali will reward your effort. The church today is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, and was renovated in 1725 by the monk Ioannikio, as indicated by the inscription at the entrance. According to tradition, however, for several centuries it was dedicated to St. John the Theologian, who had fled here, persecuted by Rome, before moving to Patmos. The church celebrates twice a year. The Nativity of St. John the Baptist on June 24 and his Beheading on August 29.
