The Monastery of Osios Theodoros (the Venerable Theodore), the protector of the island of Kythira, is situated outside the village Logothetianika. Osios Theodoros came to Kythira in 921 and presided over the church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus. Shortly thereafter, he ‘fell asleep in the Lord.’ His relic was found incorrupt by sailors passing by. In the mid-12th century, his burial spot was transformed by Monemvasian craftsmen into a temple that later became the katholiko of the monastery built around it. As shown by the inscription on the entrance, the church was renovated in 1630 by the Bishop Athanasios Valerianos. During the Venetian occupation the Monastery of Osios Theodoros was a bishopric, while during the English occupation its premises housed a school for boys, which has since been turned into a museum.
