When a local was once asked where he came from, his reply was “From a rock in the sea.” He was partly right since this island is arid with little vegetation. However, Kythnos is also very charming with its stone walls, narrow streets, whitewashed houses, churches, potted flowers, arches, cool arcades and much more.
The first inhabitants were the Dryopians, whose King’s name was Kythnos, which is how the island got its name. It was also named Thermia (heat) due to the hot water springs found there. According to archaeological findings, the island's history begins from the Mesolithic Era. Due to its geographical position it was used by the Macedon King Philip V to stop an attack by the Romans. Subsequently, it was conquered by the Venetians, the Ottoman Empire and the Russians. After the island was liberated, it became a place of exile for revolutionaries.
During ancient times it was famous for Eunomia (good laws) as Aristotle mentions in his work 'On Kythnos'. Today, residents enjoy the tranquility and beauty of their island. Their main source of income is agriculture and of course the ever increasing tourism.
Kythnos is the ideal place for those in search of a quiet holiday, who love swimming, good food, traditional feasts, but also fast and easy access from Athens.
