The fortified city of Vriokastro, which was the ancient capital of the island (10th century BC-6th century AD), lies on the West coast of the island. The findings have provided information on housing and town planning of the city and brought to light parts of sanctuaries, temples, altars, votive offerings, inscriptions, etc. dedicated to Apollo and Artemis. The ruins of a significant sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Demeter have been found at the top of the citadel.
