On the hill-background of Lefkada town lies the Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni. The monastery of the patron saint of the island is built in a position that in antiquity there was a sanctuary of the goddess Artemis. The miraculous icon of Faneromeni, which is found in the monastery, was made by Athonite monk Benjamin Kontraki 1876 on Mount Athos. Celebrated with pomp on Monday of the Holy Spirit.
