Raki Festival: Every year in Katapola on the 26th of July people celebrate the “psimeni raki”, a traditional local drink. This homemade liqueur is made of raki, honey and various spices and is offered to the visitors along with pieces of the tradition nougat of Amorgos at the feast that is organized in Katapola square.
Nougat Festival: Everybody knowns the nougat that is made of sesame and honey, but in Amorgos it has its own festival that is organised by the cultural club of Chora during the first ten days of August. The nougat of Amorgos is softer than the others and has a special taste of cumin, according to the traditional recipe of the island. The special feature of this festival is that people prepare it on the square and offer it to the visitors, who later can attend the traditional feast.
Traditional feasts: In Amorgos, as in every island, there are a lot of feasts in honour of some Saint.
On the 26th of July the feast in honour of St. Paraskevi is very famous and a lot of people attend it to enjoy the local food, the traditional raki and lots of dancing.
On the 6th of August people gather in Chora square for the feast of the Holy Cross, which has been established in recent years, but is one of the biggest in the Cyclades. Food is offered and the violin sets the pace.
One of the most famous feasts on the island is organised in Katapola on the 15th of August, where the procession of the image of the Virgin Mary is going on along with the boats from the sea that give a special atmosphere to the feast. On the same day in Aegiali there is another big feast in the church of the Panagia Epanochoriani, where they offer food, traditional dishes like patatato and xidato and of course follows traditional music and dancing.
The impressive monastery of Panagia Chozoviotisa, a trademark of the island, has its own feast with religious character on the 21st of November, on the Presentation of Mary.
Finally, the feast in honour of the Holy Cross on the 14th of September is also special, since in order to attend it, you’ll have to hike from Lagada to the church of the Holy Cross, high on Krikelo Mountain with a great view to the Aegean Sea. Not only the route, but also the ceremonial of the feast constitute a great experience that is worth having if you find yourself in Amorgos this time of the year.
Easter: You should definitely spend Easter on Amorgos, since it’s an unforgettable experience. On the Good Friday in every village people strew the road with sage and oregano for the procession of the epitaph and the smell makes this ceremony special. On the Holy Saturday you can try the traditional pastry “lazarakia” and the night of the same day thousands of fireworks will light the sky along with the smell of the traditional dishes in the atmosphere. Finally, on Sunday, people eat the traditional grilled lamb, while in the afternoon of the same day there is the procession of the images of the Virgin Mary Chozoviotisa Monastery. A big feast starts at night on Chora square.
