Lit island: In mythology, Anafi is connected with the return of the Argonauts from Colchis. In their attempt to be saved from the darkness and severe weather at sea, the Argonauts sought the help of Apollo, the god of light (amongst other things). Apollo revealed the nearest island in a shimmering beam of light and the Argonauts were thus saved. Due to the fact that it had been the island of their salvation, the Argonauts named it Anafi (= lit island), and to honor the god who helped them, they built the temple of Apollo Aiglitou (= light). The island was also the birthplace of Aeolus, the god of the winds. This was the god who helped Odysseus sail.)
